Meet the Pitcher Behind

Rob "Nellie" Nelson is the former left handed pitcher and baseball lifer behind Big League Chew. While playing with the Portland Mavericks in the late 1970s, Nelson dreamed up the idea for shredded bubble gum in a stay fresh pouch as a fun, kid friendly alternative to chewing tobacco. What started as a bullpen idea quickly grew into one of baseball's most recognizable brands — a colorful dugout icon loved by generations of players, fans, and collectors.

From the Bullpen to the Big Leagues
Big League Chew's story began in the late 1970s, when former Portland Mavericks pitcher Rob Nelson imagined a pouch of shredded bubble gum that captured the spirit of the game without the tobacco. From that original bullpen concept, Big League Chew went on to become a baseball classic loved by generations of players, fans, and collectors.
Since its debut in 1980, Big League Chew has had eighteen different flavor varieties, including favorites like Original, Outta Here Original, Sour Apple, Blue Raspberry, and Grape, giving fans plenty of options to choose from.
The first homemade batch of Big League Chew was made by Rob Nelson on February 6th, 1979—Babe Ruth's birthday!
